INTRODUCTON TO:Bullet Proof Yourself Against ATM Scam
What prompted me into researching how to prevent ATM frauds is personal and impersonal. Personal in the sense that as an ATM user myself, i need to know everything about ATM securities ,particularly as regards the safety of my bank account attached to the ATM cards .Impersonal because, as internet surfing addict, i read many stories of ATM scams in abroad where this ATM technology was imported to Nigeria and no sooner i returned back to Nigeria from my online trips to western world of ATM frauds courtesy of internet airline., i paid visits to some cyber forums in Nigeria to read what is happening back home .And what did you think i see? Friend, my curiosity for the need of ATM fraud prevention information not only for me but also for members of the public was confirmed by cry of agony of some victims of ATM scams posters. I will reproduce two of such here for your to digest:
CRY 1
“ Believe this o, it is real, very real. Let me explain , this happened to my very close friend. Someone somehow got to know is password[PIN NUMBERs] and card number, got another card from God knows where and drained all his money in the account. On getting to the bank to complain, they made him look like a confused guy , because they kept on telling him he withdrew the money himself, they even told him the particular ATM machine, the day and time. The annoying part is that it was on valentine’s day it happened, when boys were busy drinking garri in the hostel, so beware, ATM cards are not secure as they seems.” Source: www. nairaland.com
CRY 2
“ This is a serious case[ATM FRAUDS] as it happens to my wife and she fell for the scam before you know it they have withdrew money from her account by using the information to purchase things online. Let everyone be aware as this criminals are bent to give us bad name in this country. They should also know that if they did not stop this nefarious act the hand of the law will soon catch up with each and every one of them.”

So having read, heard and being told relatively similar stories, I decided to research into ATM card safety. In the course of searching I discovered that the ATM industry in Nigeria comprises of banks, independent deplorers of ATM, e-payment switching company[networking] and e-payment regulatory body. In addition, I realized the unrelenting efforts each of these companies are putting in place all in a bid to giving maximum security to ATM card users in Nigeria. For instance, the e-payment regulatory body in Nigeria, the CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA {CBN} has ordered all the banks and card providers in the country to move from the magnetic stripe protected ATM cards which are still largely in circulation to a more advanced electronic chip protected ATM cards. December 31, 2008 deadline was slated to phase out magnetic stripe cards to more secured micro chips cards. But unfortunately, most people are still parading the insecure and stone age magnetic stripe ATM protected card. At this juncture, I strongly advice you to leave this report now and go to your bank for information on how to change your card to a verve chip protected ATM card. This single step can give you 80% ATM safety.
Also, contrary to some people fear that the ATM machines and cards are not secure and safe, I find out that one should not give room to such fear, because according to the Global ATM Security Alliance {GASA} that .0016% of all ATM transactions worldwide are affected by crime or fraud.
In addition, I observed that many ATM card users are not aware of proper use of ATM facilities, particularly their own duties to maintain the security and privacy of their ATM personal information details, many methods criminals perpetrate ATM frauds aside from telling someone your PIN numbers and inability to differentiates between ATM ERRORS and ATM FRAUDS. Hence, the publication of this booklet.
As you read and apply it, I pray and wish you problem free ATM transactions life, amen.
