OLINE PAYMENT RULES OF THUMB
1] Don’t do online payment or banking in a cyber café. It is not safe.
2] If you own a system and is connected to internet service, ensure you are protect against
Online scams by installing on your computer a good: firewall software, spy ware
blocking software and updated anti-virus software program.
3] Always check the website certificate and that it has a pad locked key at the bottom
right hand corner. Every ecommerce [a selling and buying website built to accept credit
And ATM cards] must redirect their customers to a HTTPS. Let me explain, when next
You are online visit www.ebay.com and pretend as if you want to make payment, you will
be redirected to a secure protocol i.e https://www.ebay.com ; notice the “s” after
“http”
That stand for secure and most of the scammers do not have it, even if they do, they can’t afford to have a certificate to hide their illegal activities.
4] Whenever you intend to use your Interswitch enabled ATM cards to make payment
online, ensure you are redirected to Interswitch website or better still go direct to the
www.interswitchng.com and go directly to the page where merchant websites are listed
and look for company you want to make payment to. Interswitch mandated all merchants
using their platform to accept payment to redirect their customers who are about to make
payment to their website.
5] If for any reason you buy stuff online or buy recharge vouchers and you don’t get it
[May be on a fake or dummy website or something of sort], immediately change your
PIN number and contact your bank or card provider.
6] If you must use cyber café to carry out online payment and banking, ensure to carry
out these operations:
a] check if the cyber café has anti-virus on the system, follow this route on the desktop go
to start-setting-control panel, then double click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, you
will see a list of programs on the system among which anti-virus must be one if it is
there.
b] Check if there is keystroke logger software on the system [this software is normally
being downloaded by hackers on a system to gather unsuspecting browsers private data
Such as: PIN number, password, e-mail address, and other vital private information.
These will later be used by them to scam their victims]. Take these steps to uncover it:
go to the desktop on your system, from there go to start-setting-control panel, then double
click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, this will show you some programs on the
system such as anti-virus, yahoo messenger e.t.c. So here you will need to look very well
for keystroke logger which may read as : password stealer, password killer or password
logger, click on it to highlight it and click remove and you are done. You may need to re-
start the system and when it comes up, go and look for the keystroke logger if it still
there. Better still, look for another system.
c] When you are in a cyber café to make online payment or do internet banking, make
sure no one is looking at your back and more importantly don’t accept or call anybody to help you make online transaction in a cyber café.
d] Whenever you transact with your ATM card or conduct internet banking in a cyber
café, make you always sign out of your account, because I do see some people leaving
their account without signing out after browsing.
e] Always avoid a cyber café operating night browsing sessions. Because of them are
being patronized by fraudsters and” yahoo yahoo” boys who might have installed identity stealing software on their systems.
